DRINKABLE MAYO: HAS JAPAN GONE TOO FAR?

In December 2024, Japanese convenience store chain Lawson has launched an unusual product called “Nomu Mayo,” a drinkable mayonnaise beverage. Priced at ¥198 (about $1.30) for a 200ml bottle, this “mayonnaise-style drink” clearly states on its label that it is “not mayonnaise.“ The ingredients include milk, milk ingredients, and mayonnaise seasoning, creating a chilled drink targeted at mayonnaise fans.
We at Hela were curious about how this drink tasted and decided to whip up a batch to taste test. We started by thinking of this drink as more of a savoury eggnog and building the recipe up from there. We used extra egg yolk, and a touch of MSG because we’re matching the flavour of Japanese mayo after all.
While we haven’t taste the Nomu Mayo drink, we can say that our version was a success, it tasted like mayo, had a rich creamy texture, pronounced egg yolk flavour and umami from the MSG. While we were successful, it’s not a drink anyone will be in a hurry to try again! It confused our palates and left some regretting their decision to try.
While a Japanese mayo drink isn’t soon to become a staple in North American convenience store, we realized that like high fashion many of these high concept ideas will filter down to more digestible formats like these:
