Cheese, one of the most universally beloved foods. The appreciation for cheese has, until recent times, eluded vegans and lactose intolerant people. The majority of the vegan cheeses being marketed were found to be lacking in the subtle cheesy flavours, creamy textures, melting, slicing and dipping functionalities and quite often, even nutrition. In spite of some limitations, there are a number of good tasting and recognizable brands of vegan cheese that continue to sell well.
At Hela Spice, our team of creative product developers have examined the limitations of today’s products and have established a great line of plant-based cheese products. These products provide great flavour, texture, and most importantly, functionality. We have used our ingredient expertise to develop a line products that contribute plant-based protein without the use of nuts, soy, or wheat allergens!
PLANT-BASED
CHEDDAR STYLE CHEESE
Vegan cheddar style cheese, a “go to” style of cheese product that is a necessity for any company selling vegan cheese products. Hela Spice has spent extra time creating a range of flavour strengths, colours and firmness to emulate everything from a mild cheddar, all the way to an aged old. It can be sliced, diced or crumbled. It melts on burgers and makes a mean grilled sandwich. We have the ability to adjust texture, flavour and colour to meet specific customer needs.
Sliced Processed Style Cheese
The team really had to work on this one. To capture the “wonderful” processed cheese flavour and colour and still get that stringy, gooey melt that consumers have come to expect. It was tough, but now you can have a plant-based grilled cheese sandwich, just like the best roadside diner used to make. And it’s a healthy option!
Plant-Based Mild Cheddar Style Cheese
A step up in consumer expectation. A mild cheddar has to be able to be sliced, crumbled or shaved and that is what our imaginative thinkers were able to achieve with a plant-based option. It has great flavour, colour and 4% protein. Everything to meet consumer expectations.
Plant Based Old Cheddar Style Cheese
Deliciously building on the mild cheddar style cheese version, additional attributes like a firmer and more crumbly texture, stronger and sharper cheddar notes and richer colours were added. A great tasting premium style product that delivers on the expectations of demanding consumers.

LET'S GO ITALIAN
A sacred area to cheese lovers around the world. Consumers have particular expectations for flavour, appearance, and functionality when it comes to Italian style cheeses. Hela Spice’s creative R&D thinkers looked at the vegan products on the market and asked themselves, how can we take these products to the next level?
After lots of hard work, innovative ingredient application, and testing, and even more testing, they have come up with wonderful products that closely emulate parmesan (hard and soft) and mozzarella. Using a variety of vegetable protein sources, imaginative ingredient combinations and effort, they got the finished products, just right.

Hela Spice knows dairy cream cheese. We know how to enrobe it, flavour it create new uses for it, so it was only natural that when we were looking at plant-based cheese, that we would create a plantbased cream cheese. We also know cream cheese dips and how to create great tasting decadent flavours, so we have plant-based cream cheese dips as well!
We again took a step up on what is available in the marketplace. We have created a plant-based cream cheese with the perfect texture, flavour, and colour that’s just begging to be spread on a toasted bagel! There are two basic flavours of dairy-based cream cheese available, cow or goat. We have managed to emulate both of the main flavours of cream cheese in plant-based versions, with 5% vegetable protein as well. Now all a potential processor has to do is select the flavours, inclusions or enrobements that would appeal to your potential customers (and we can help you with the latest flavour trends as well).

HAVARTI STYLE CHEESE
Havarti style cheese is well known and appreciated for its versatility and rich creamy flavour. Hela Spice has a wealth of experience creating great tasting flavoured and spiced Havarti cheeses. When we embarked on creating a line of delicious plant-based cheeses, Havarti was at the top of our list. It wasn’t easy, but after many iterations, our creative developers were able to emulate the creamy textures and subtle flavours of Havarti, in a plant-based cheese.
How about these flavours?
- Start with the basic, a plain creamy plant-based Havarti
- Or a spicier chipotle or jalapeno
- A fresh tasting dill works well with the buttery plant-based Havarti flavour
